New app finds food with a conscience
Your next coffee or meal could be a better one for the planet, thanks to a new app launched by Ecotourism Australia Business Member, Fair Food Forager (FFF).
The app - available for free on iPhone and Android - lists hundreds of sustainable restaurants, cafes and grocery stores across Australia. You can search healthy, ethical and sustainable food options in your location and share new food discoveries with other users.
Thanks to environmentally conscious users that have been busily searching and sharing their own fair food discoveries, the FFF app now lists about 400 sustainable food options Australia-wide. These include 300 businesses that are sourcing their produce locally, supporting local farmers and other local producers.
FFF was built on the belief that eating shouldn’t cost the earth. Founder Paul Hellier’s goal is to share the best and most socially and environmentally ethical food spots with those keen to lower their impact on the planet.
FFF listings are based on a range of sustainability criteria including supporting local food production, minimising packaging waste and decreasing food waste - for example by composting food scraps or donating excess food.
The platform also lists businesses that offer great vegetarian or vegan options, use organic ingredients or serve ethically-produced products such as free range eggs and sustainable seafood, as well as many other low-impact initiatives.
Everyone wins, whether you’re a tourist in a new city or a local in your own town. Businesses that care about the environment get the recognition and support they deserve while consumers can feel good about lowering the impacts associated with food.

FFF is on the lookout for more enthusiastic, environmentally aware foodies to become fair food ambassadors, to help continue to populate their app and website. Listings are starting to come in from New Zealand, so if you have any favourite food secrets, the FFF team would love to hear from you!
If you are a producer or supplier of sustainable, local products, they are also populating the site with these types of businesses. “We not only want to point out the food venues that deserve your money, we also want to help these venues find ethical suppliers near them,” said Hellier.
“It’s great that we can help consumers make better choices, though we also want to move forward and help business to do more, and sourcing locally is a huge part of that."
