Congratulations to our newest certified operator, Spirit of Hervey Bay, for achieving Ecotourism Certification for their Spirit of Hervey Bay and Yahoo tours!

Spirit of Hervey Bay has been offering whale watching cruises in Hervey bay for over thirty years and know what it takes to make a cruise entertaining and adventurous. With a focus on offering visitors the chance to go on the trip of a lifetime without breaking the bank, the company offers a variety of ½ day and ¾ day tours on its Spirit of Hervey Bay vessel and morning and afternoon whale watching experiences on Yahoo.

The Spirit of Hervey Bay is the bigger of the company’s two vessels, offering five levels of viewing platforms so that all guests can spread out and get that perfect shot. This vessel also features underwater viewing windows, a waterline platform and an open air top deck.

The Yahoo vessel offers adventurous tourists a unique experience – speed and adrenaline combine with amazing opportunities to view whales up close and personal, as this vessel has a maximum of 32 passengers on board and a low deck level to the water.

Spirit of Hervey Bay is conscious of their operation’s impact on the environment and works hard to contribute to the conservation objectives of the Great Sandy Straits Marine Park (GSSMP). They do this by:

  • Ensuring compliance with all environmental legislations
  • Identifying and minimising all possible environmental risks of their business
  • Ensuring that there are no long-term negative environmental or cultural impacts from their operations
  • Reducing their contributions to greenhouse gas emissions and improving resilience to climate change
  • Educating tourists on how to reduce their impact by developing their appreciation and understanding of the area.

Currently, Spirit of Hervey Bay is working hard to promote recycling among guests by introducing recycle bins on their vessels, reduce paper use by making all information available online and thus reducing the need for printed brochures and providing information about ecotourism and climate change on their website.

All staff employed by Spirit of Hervey Bay are also given extensive on the job training that encompasses environmental impacts and environmental awarendss education, ensuring that they can pass the key messages of environmental management and protection onto their guests.

Congratulations again to Spirit of Hervey Bay – we are very happy to have you on board!
