This month welcomed the beginning of the turtle nesting season on parts of Queensland’s coast. From November through to January, mother turtles will arrive on Mon Repos shore to dig up their nests and lay their eggs.

From January to late March the little hatchlings will make their way towards the ocean. However, you can catch the turtles all year round at Lady Elliot Island - home to Advanced Ecotourism certified Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort.

Some of our operators offer amazing experiences to get up close and personal with these beautiful and fascinating creatures. Fun over 50 do a ‘Turtle Encounter at Mon Repos Rookery’ tour, Ocean Safari Cape Tribulation offer the ‘Ocean Safari Turtle Tripper Adventure’, and Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort are home to the turtles for majority of the year. If you’re after an experience that will assist with turtle conservation, the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre conduct daily tours, provides information on the turtles, and offer volunteer opportunities.
