Congratulations Intrepid Travel on your 6th year anniversary for becoming one of the biggest carbon neutral travel companies in the world.

In 2006 Intrepid Travel began their 4-year journey to carbon neutrality – having zero net CO2 emissions for assessed activities – and officially becoming a carbon neutral company in July 2010. Since then, they have offset over 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from their trips and offices worldwide, including 36,500 tonnes of carbon in 2015 alone.

One of the most urgent problems facing our world today is climate change – a problem that the tourism industry can’t ignore any longer. As a travel company they realised that it was their responsibility to sustain and protect the environment they use and enjoy. Intrepid Travel made a commitment over 10 years ago to minimise their environmental impact through their Carbon Management Plan, which helps them operate their business in a sustainable manner, addresses their environmental commitments under the United Nations Global Compact and outlines their carbon offsetting initiatives.

In order for Intrepid to reduce their carbon emissions, they seek less carbon-intensive alternatives where possible, and then balance the remaining emissions by purchasing internationally-certified carbon credits.

Various methods are used to decrease the carbon emissions generated from their trips such as staying in simple, locally-owned accommodation and eating at locally-owned restaurants where the food has been sourced close-by.  To balance the remaining emissions, offsets are purchased on behalf of each and every one of their travellers. Although the majority of the emissions are generated from their trips, Intrepid also employs practices such as measuring, avoiding, reducing, and offsetting carbon-related usage in their offices and stores around the world.
