Mackay Tourism achieves Climate Action Innovator certification
Ecotourism Australia is excited to congratulate Mackay Tourism on achieving Climate Action Innovator certification. Mackay Tourism Ltd., a not-for-profit, membership-based, marketing and destination development organisation, is the peak tourism organisation for the Mackay - Isaac region, promoting the region for both leisure and business.
Through infrastructure and product development, increased skills for industry members and effective, targeted promotion in their selected leisure and business tourism markets, Mackay Tourism aims to increase the competitive strengths and success of their destination.
The Climate Action Certification program is dedicated to reducing carbon emissions and assuring travellers that certified products are backed by a commitment to sustainable practices related to climate change. This is achieved by ensuring that businesses undertake a set of adaptation and emissions reduction strategies and are auditing and measuring their carbon footprint.
The Mackay Tourism team is committed to reducing their impact on the environment by implementing a sustainability plan that outlines key activities. These include recycling, reducing electricity consumption (including installing LED lights and upgrading their air conditioning) and educating tourists and tourism businesses on travelling lightly and reducing their own environmental impacts. Mackay Tourism also supports the development of quality, sustainable tourism businesses in their region through encouraging ecotourism certification for nature based tourism experiences and hosting certification workshops with Ecotourism Australia.
